Safe At Home Act: House Bill 404
As a step toward improving tenant rights in Georgia, Georgia Appleseed worked diligently with partners to pass House Bill 404: Safe at Home Act, which was signed into law in May, 2024.
Key benefits of Safe at Home include:
- Requires rental properties to be “fit for human habitation.”
- Caps security deposits at two months’ rent.
- Provides tenants a three-day grace period (“right to cure”) before a landlord can file for an eviction in court.
- Includes “cooling” as a utility that cannot be shut off before eviction proceedings conclude.
