Role Summary:

The Georgia Appleseed Center for Law & Justice is seeking a dedicated Staff Attorney to join our team and support our School Justice and Housing Justice initiatives, with a particular focus on the FAIR project. Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advocacy and Representation: Provide brief legal services and advice to parents, case managers, and other caregivers. Represent children in education discipline and special education cases, performing both intake and follow-up on case outcomes.
  • Research and Documentation: Conduct legal research, draft high-quality policy papers, reports, talking points, and legal guides. Make complex legal information accessible to non-lawyer audiences.
  • Training and Coaching: Design and lead advocacy trainings for advocates for children, including case managers, parents, and guardians ad litem.
  • Policy and Program Development: Develop and execute policy and programmatic recommendations. Support Policy Counsels in reviewing and summarizing pro bono project findings.
  • Community Engagement: Cultivate local community engagement across the state. Collaborate and network with local and state social services communities to create and maintain a statewide community resource guide for advocates.
  • Coalition Support: Provide staffing support to Georgia Appleseed coalitions, including scheduling, creating agendas, distributing notes, and coordinating pro bono support.
  • Travel and Outreach: Plan and undertake regular travel throughout the state for coalition facilitation and partnership meetings, including some overnight trips (typically 8-10 per year).
  • Communication and Reporting: Assist with monthly reporting, newsletters, social media posts, and website updates.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor and a current license to practice law in Georgia.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and passion for Georgia Appleseed’s mission.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, internet, technology, and cloud-based applications.
  • High level of organization and productivity, ability to handle multiple projects, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Confidence in representing Georgia Appleseed’s research and recommendations to various audiences. 
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for regular use.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Annual salary of $60,000 to $80,000, based on experience.

Location:
This full-time position is based in Atlanta, GA, with a combination of remote and in-office work, plus travel throughout Georgia as needed.
