Toolkit: School Tribunals

Before a school suspends or expels a child for over 10 days, the school must hold a School Disciplinary Hearing (sometimes called a Tribunal). These tools are designed to help parents and guardians, advocates, caseworkers, and even attorneys prepare to advocate for a child in a school tribunal hearing. 

Georgia Appleseed’s FAIR (Fairness, Advocacy & Individualized Representation) project helps connect students with advocates and attorneys. While the Referral Form and School Tribunal Checklist are created specifically for advocates of children in foster care, most of the other tools will be helpful more generally.

In 2024, we released a free online training course for Advocating for Children in Foster Care. While initially targeted specifically for advocates for children in foster care, all other caregivers and representatives will find helpful information about advocating in school disciplinary hearings in Georgia.
