A New Course Empowering Advocacy
At Georgia Appleseed, we believe every child deserves a champion, especially in moments of crisis. Our work with children and those who care for them has driven us to develop a practical free online training course, “Advocating for Children in Foster Care.” Enhancing our digital and printed guidance, this online course is an essential resource for caseworkers, foster parents, teachers, counselors, attorneys, and anyone who plays a role in a child’s life at critical times.
Understanding the Tribunal Process
Before a school can suspend or expel a child for more than ten days, a School Disciplinary Hearing, sometimes known as a Tribunal, must be convened. This process can be daunting and complex, particularly for children in foster care who already face numerous challenges. Our course aims to demystify this process and provide the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively advocate for these vulnerable children.
Course Modules: A Deep Dive into Advocacy
The course is structured around four comprehensive modules, each designed to build your advocacy skills progressively:
- Why Advocacy Matters: This introductory module helps you understand the significant impact that effective advocacy can have on a child’s life, especially in disciplinary situations.
- Early Advocacy: Learn the importance of early intervention and how taking proactive steps can prevent escalations that lead to disciplinary actions.
- Preparing for a Tribunal Hearing: This module covers everything you need to know to prepare for a hearing, including gathering evidence, understanding legal requirements, and psychological preparation.
- Advocating in a Tribunal Hearing: Gain practical skills for effective advocacy during the hearing itself, ensuring that the child’s voice is heard and their rights are protected.
Who Should Take This Course?
“Advocating for Children in Foster Care” is designed for anyone involved in the welfare of children in the foster care system, but will be helpful for any child who may face disciplinary actions in school. Whether you are a new caseworker, an experienced attorney, a seasoned foster parent, or concerned educator, this course will equip you with the skills needed to make a difference in the lives of these children.
