Laverne Lewis Gaskins

Laverne Lewis Gaskins serves as a Senior Legal Advisor at Augusta University (formerly “Georgia Regents University”). Prior to joining Augusta University, Gaskins most recently served as University Attorney for Valdosta State. She earned her law degree from Florida State University College of Law and currently serves on its Alumni Board of Directors. Gaskins is a former Georgia Special Assistant Attorney General and represented the Georgia Department of Human Resources. She is a current member of the Boards of Governors for the State Bar of Georgia, and the National Bar Association. She is a member of the Investigative Panel of State Bar Disciplinary Board, and from 2014-2015 served as its Chair.

She serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of College and University Law, and is a current member of the Board of Advisors of the Campus Legal Advisor, and is Editor-In-Chief of the National Bar Association Magazine. Her articles have appeared in a variety of publications including, the Georgia Bar Journal, National Bar Association Magazine, Campus Legal Advisor, Diverse Magazine, The International Journal for Education Law and Policy, and The Journal of
College and University Law

A Fulbright grant recipient in law, Gaskins has lectured at universities in Hungary and Canada. In 2014, she travel to South Africa and presented a paper, discussing the United States Supreme court decision in Fisher v. Texas, at the Education and the Constitution at 20 Conference. In 2015, she traveled to Vienna, Austria as the American Bar Association’s representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

She was twice elected (2008 and 2012) to represent District 1 at the Democratic National Convention, and is a former Secretary and Deputy General Counsel of the Democratic Party of Georgia. She is the recipient of numerous honors, including the 2013, Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys Zenith Political Action Award, and in 2009 she received the Justice Benham Award for Community Service. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Augusta.
